Iona Students Feature in Book Launch
Beyond This Story – Writing Competition 2013
On the 21st of March we all attended a book launch at Tauranga Intermediate. In 2013 we had entered a writing competition known as Beyond This Story. It had to be a hyper-fiction story based on an event that was historical to New Zealand. We were given a limit of 750 words and set to work creating our stories. After the entire intermediate department had finished their stories all of them were emailed to the judges. The chosen entries were to be put in a book called Beyond This Story (which is now on sale for $30 a copy).
After reading the entries sent from all over New Zealand the judges had chosen 1st, 2nd and 3rd for both Year 7 and Year 8. As well as four people in Year 8 who achieved highly commended and five in Year 7.
The judges were so pleased with all the other entries they decided to add an extra 30 stories to the book that was going to be published. From Iona College, Grace Wilton and Phoebe Williams achieved highly commended for Year 7.
For the 30 others we had six students invited to submit their work for publishing: Year 7s were Kate Manahi, Grace Windhager, and from Year 8 was Allie Chesterman, Emily Richardson, Isobelle Walker and Matilda Shotter-Davies.
Unfortunately only three of us could attend the book launch in Tauranga; Grace Wilton, Kate Manahi and Phoebe Williams.
We all drove up to Tauranga and arrived at Tauranga Intermediate at 5:30pm. After navigating ourselves through construction zones we found the library. Then after much meeting and greeting Grace Wilton and Phoebe Williams were presented with a certificate and got to meet the judges.
All in all it was an amazing experience and we would recommend this competition to any keen young writers.
