Hawke’s Bay Food Industry Big Day Out

On Tuesday the 1st of June, Isabel White, Emma Kingston, Lydia Pulford and I, Sacha Spurrier, set off in the morning to experience what turned out to be a fantastic day at the Hawke’s Bay Food Industry Big Day Out.

 We arrived at Plant & Food Research in Havelock North and the day started with several presentations from Food Technologists and Food Engineers from Heinz Wattie’s, Orica Chemnet, Pall NZ and Plant & Food Research. We learnt about their career pathways and work experience since graduating before splitting  into groups where we went with one of the ambassadors to our first stop for the morning. Isabel and Emma went to Alto Packaging where they were shown the machinery that made plastic into packaging for things such as yoghurt pots. Lydia and I went to Pro Fruit in Hastings where we learnt and saw how they created syrup to be diluted as fresh up, not to mention we got a few free bottles of it ourselves!  We then all met up again at Heinz Wattie’s where we had lunch before doing a few sensory tests with Coke and Pepsi, Tim Tams and Chit Chats. After filling our empty stomachs, we geared up in our white suits and entered the factory which was a fascinating experience.

The photo shows a few of us having a tour through the factory. We all had a fabulous time at the Big Day Out and we thank the school, especially Mrs. Ross, for organizing for the four of us to get there and participate alongside the other high school students from the region.
