Singing Success at Kids Sing 2010

Every child is musically expressive and deserves the opportunity to explore their capacity.  The Choral based programme in Years 7 & 8 at Iona College aims to provide the opportunity for all Intermediate students to express and explore themselves musically through voice – to awaken the singers’ potential for self development, musical expression, and self esteem.  A combined Year 7 & 8 class takes place once a week whereby our Singing Teacher, Mrs A Pierard, teaches the girls effective voice technique and warming up the voice.  This is followed by team-teaching of choral repertoire from a wide range of literature, directed by HOD Music Miss A Warmke.  Every year, we prepare for performances such as the Kids Sing, Blossom Festival Concert and Carol Services.
On Wednesday 18 August, Les Petites Voix directed by Miss A Warmke performed 3 pieces at the annual Kids Sing at the Hawke’s Bay Opera House.  Kids Sing is an adjudicated choir festival for Hawke’s Bay students aged from Year 5 through to Year 8.  This year, 8 choirs from different schools performed.  All 45 members of Les Petites Voix (all of Iona Year 7s and 8s) had spent many hours developing good voice technique, memorising the lyrics of the three pieces and working together as a choir leading up to Kids Sing 2010.  This was supported by the section leaders:  Alice Bambry (Soprano 1 leader), Georgia Barrow (Section 2 leader) and Malindi Wilson (Alto leader) who run extra rehearsals as well as by Kate Scott (Choir Manager) and Jennifer Nimon (Assistant Manager).  Our programme consisted of the set piece, ‘I Lost My Homework’, ‘In My Room’ and the fiery ‘Chili Caliente’ which featured four talented percussionists (Phoebe Wedd, Samantha Mactaggart, Olivia Druzianic and Anna Morete).  The adjudicator this year was Mr Joe Christensen.  We all waited in anticipation to find out the result of our adjudicated performance which was not announced until after the evening performance where every choir performed one piece from their repertoire.  Les Petites Voix performed their favourite ‘Chili Caliente’ with great energy once again to a full house audience at the Opera House.  For Kids Sing 2010, Les Petites Voix received GOLD award and the best Overall Performance trophy – first time in Iona College history.  Our choir erupted in excitement when this fantastic result was announced!  The bus trip back to school is definitely one to remember.

What a wonderful achievement!
