RICH TASK ACTIVITIES
ART, CRAFT, FUN AND A LEARNING EXPERIENCE
For four days, Years 7 to 9 worked together in groups on a cross-curricular task. A range of activities on the topic of Gardens and Plants were undertaken by groups of students, each group being drawn from all three year levels. The students spent a day visiting local businesses activities or having demonstrations from experts in a particular area. Using the knowledge and skills they acquired in the initial part of the week, groups then set about developing a design process for their own product. Teaching departments circulated among the groups to share expertise. The students’ ideas and final products were shared with the other groups in a presentation on the last afternoon. The products included pesto, clay and modelling products, garden ornaments, aprons and kneelers, embroidery, wreaths and floral art, wooden products, mini-scarecrows, decoupage, potpourri, citrus products, cards and wrapping paper.
The students enjoyed this opportunity to work with others, to share a different learning experience with both students and teachers and to design and see their product through to completion. The innovative and complex products made by the students were outstanding.
