The following people were selected to represent the school at the Hawkes Bay Secondary School Sports Awards which were held at the Municipal Theatre on Monday November the 5th. Nathan Fa’avae was the guest speaker for the evening; we all enjoyed hearing about his amazing sporting achievements and experiences as one of the world’s greats adventure racers.
Sian Fendall, Netball umpiring – received a merit award for the New Zealand Couriers Student Contribution to HBSS Sport. Sian has been awarded the Hastings Centre Umpiring Badge and is now qualified to umpire up to Presidents Grade top level Club games on Saturdays and has gained her Regional Theory for Netball Umpiring. At the Hastings Netball Centre Prize-giving Sian was awarded the “Most improved Student Umpire” (NZ Young Umpires Award).
Iona Nominations for the Shoe Clinic H SS Female Sports Person of the year Award were:
- Phoebe Treseder – Cycling
- Emma Godwin – Swimming
- Courtney Gettins – Softball
- Hannah McLeod – Athletics
- Flo de Bievre – Athletics
- Sarah Karika – Surf life-saving and Athletics
Courtney Gettins received a merit award. Only seven merit awards were awarded out of the 28 nominees from varies secondary schools. Courtney was selected into the New Zealand International Softball Academy [ISA] which toured the United States; she was then selected for the NZ Junior U19 White Sox Quad and just recently made the NZ Women’s White Sox Squad to play in the Gillies tournament in Perth – the youngest in the team.
Mr Alan Potts was recognised as a worthy recipient of the Plus Rehab Service to HBSS Sport Award for his 20 years of service to Iona for coaching our school track runners – rain hail or shine. Mr Potts has been a president of the Athletics NZ and is now a life member of the Athletics NZ. He received his award and did us proud wearing his new Iona jacket!
