Concert Band
The Concert Band has been established since 2007. Twenty five students from Year 7-Year 13 rehearse once a week. They perform at the Hawke’s Bay Festival of bands and at school events.
Les Petites Voix
All Year 7 and 8 studetns perform in this choir. As part of our curriculum music programme, students are given professional singing tuition to develop their voices and a passion for singing. This choir competes at Kids Sing the annual competiton run by the NZ Choral Federatiion for intermediate students. They also perform at the Hawke’s Bay Blossom Festival and school events.
Ionian Singers
This long established choir is for students from Year 9 -Year13. They rehearse once a week and compete in the Big Sing competition run by the NZ Choral Federation as well as performing at the Hawke’s Bay Blossom Festival and school events. They are regularly asked to sing at other venues.
Iona Pure
Established in 2011, Iona Pure is an auditioned choir of 12-16 members. They rehearse at least twice a week and compete in NZ Choral Federation events as well as perform at public events. The director of both choirs is Mr Jose Aparicio.
Chamber Music Ensembles
Smaller groups of talented musicians form ensembles with the view to participating in the annual chamber music competition. Groups are formed matching skill levels and suitable instrument combinations.
Music Theory
Since 2007, all students have been offered the opportunity to sit the Royal Schools’ of Music Theory examinations at any level. 60 girls enrol in this activity each year.
Private Tuition
As well as school based actitivites, private tutition is available at Iona for a range of cultural pursuits.
In music their are opportunities for tuition in: voice, piano, keyboard, guitar, drums, brass (trumpet, euphonium etc), flute, clarinet, violin, cello. In fact, almost any instrument can be learnt.
Studetns can also receive private tuition in speech and drama and public speaking.
Kapa Haka
Iona College has a small but proud Kapa Haka group. Presently tutored by Shelley Pritchard, they perform at school events.
Debating
Iona students have a long tradition of Debating. Senior and junior teams compete in local and regional competitons. Debating is also part of the school House competitions.
Make and Model
Iona boasts some talented design students. Students regularly excell in local, regional and national design competitions.
Photography Club
This club offers students the opportunity to explore their passion for photography and learn the skills to develop their interest to the next level.
Drama
Drama is an integral component in House competitions. A major production alternates every year with an Arts Fest week.
