NZ SECONDARY SCHOOLS ATHLETICS SUCCESS
Sarah Karika, Hannah Harty and Hannah McLeod enjoyed the results achieved at the recent competition.
The NZ Secondary Schools Athletics competition was held recently in Hastings and was the first major event hosted at the new Sports Park.
Eight girls from Iona competed in the competition and nearly every girl achieved a PB in one of their events, which was indicative of the training they have all been doing. The stand out athlete for Iona was Sarah Flynn, showing strength, determination and focus in her chosen event – the Senior Girls 400m. Sarah cruised through to the final with a PB and then set an even faster time of 58.31s in the final to claim silver.
Credit must also go to Lucy Ross who achieved two 5th placings, one with a PB in the Hammer. Hannah McLeod made the 100m Hurdles final placing 6th, with PB’s in each race. Sarah Karika and Emily Mackie both had PB’s in the sprints with Sarah narrowly missing out of the final placings in both the 100 and 200m. The 2000m Walk saw Leigh Douglas attain a PB.
Iona’s team in the 4 x 400m relay saw each girl make a superb effort, creating lots of excitement for the spectators finishing 3rd in their heat and after heat 2, it was confirmed that they had won the bronze medal.
Congratulations to all who participated and many thanks for the volunteers who helped over the weekend.
